Time Capsule
Time Capsule is a companion product to Time Machine, Leopard's automated backup feature. Its a full blown AirPort Extreme 802.11n base station. It also includes 1 gigabit WAN port and 3 gigabit LAN ports as well as a USB 2.0 Port for plugging in a printer and/or external hard drive. Additionally, Apple has now included dual band capabilities, meaning it can run at both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz at the same time. Another addition to Time Capsule is a new feature that allows you to create a guest network with access to only internet if you choose so your shared printers, folders, etc aren’t available to other users of the network. What makes this product so unique is that it has a server grade hard drive inside it. Apple gives you a choice of either a 2 TB or 3 TB hard drives. When you plug it in, you just tell Time Machine in the system preferences to use Time Capsule which is automatically recognized by Time Machine after running the supplied CD. The initial backup can take a few hours depending on how much storage you're already using. Its recommended that you hook up Time Capsule via gigabit ethernet the very first time you do your backup as it will go much faster through ethernet than from wireless. The new AirPort software that ships with Time Capsule gives you a few extra options such as timed access. This is where you give specific network devices a specific time it can access the time capsule wirelessly. Time Capsule includes all of the other security features that are standard in the regular AirPort Extreme Base Station, such as WEP, WPA2, WPA2 Enterprise, RADIUS, and MAC Address filtering. If you’re a mobileme subscriber you now have the option to access any data on your Time Capsule from where in the world via the internet.
